Pass Christian Middle School was recently honored with the Governor’s Award at the PREPS-MAPE Conference in Choctaw, Mississippi, for their development of a vegetable garden on the K-8 Center for Excellence campus. Charlene Stephens, 6th grade social studies teacher and sponsor of this project, and her students planted many types of vegetables, tended to the garden, and then harvested the crops. Kale and Swiss Chard Salads were enjoyed by administration and students. The cafeteria staff demonstrated to the students how to cook collards and green mustard. Students also learned the nutritional value of fresh vegetables. Many thanks to the partnerships on this project: Pass Christian Elementary School and Mary Cordray, co-sponsor of the project; Boys and Girls Club at Qatar Center in Pass Christian; Harrison County Soil and Water Conservation District and FoodCorps.
